Know your national flag – what it is & how it is
The Flag of Sri Lanka, also called the Lion Flag, consists of gold lion passant, holding a sword in its right fore paw, in front of a crimson background with four golden bo leaves in each corner. Around the background is a yellow border, and to its left are 2 vertical stripes of equal size in saffron and green, with the saffron stripe closest to the lion. It was adopted in 1950 following the recommendations of a committee appointed by the 1st Prime Minister of Ceylon, The Rt Hon D.S. Senanayake History When Vijay, the first King of the island of Sri Lanka , arrived in Sri Lanka from India in 486 BCE, he brought with him a flag with a symbol of a lion on it. Since then the Lion symbol played a significant role in the history of Sri Lanka. It was used extensively by monarchs who followed King Vijaya and it became a symbol of freedom and hope. When the legendary King Dutugemunu embarked on the campaign in which he defeated the Tamil King Elara, who had occupied part of Sri Lanka , he carried with him a banner which portrayed a lion carrying a sword on his right forepaw along with two other symbols, the Sun and the Moon. The banner was in use until 1815, when the reign of the last king of the Kandyan Kingdom, King Sri Vikrama Rajasinha was brought to an end when the Kandyan nobility signing of the Kandy convention on 2 March thus proclaiming King George III as King of Ceylon and replaced the Lion flag with the Union Flag as the national flag of Ceylon . The government of British Ceylon used its own flag. The Lion Flag was taken to England and kept at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. As the years passed, the design of the flag was forgotten by the Sri Lankan public. Then, as the independence movement in Sri Lanka gained strength in the early 20th century, E. W. Perera, a prominent figure of the independence movement with the help of D. R. Wijewardene, the press baron, discovered the original Lion flag in Chelsea . A picture of it was subsequently published in a special edition of the Dinamina newspaper to mark 100 years since the end of Sri Lankan independence. The Lion flag then became a centre piece of attraction to the public, who for the first time since the fall of the Kandyan Kingdom were now aware of its actual design. In 1948 the flag was adapted as the national flag of the Dominion of Ceylon, however the flag underwent several changes in 1953 and again in 1972. During the same year four leaves of the Bo tree were added to the four corners of the Sri Lankan National flag under the direction of Nissanka Wijeyeratne. At the time, he was Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Chairman of the National Emblem and Flag Design Committee. Prior to 1972, the corners of the flag were occupied by symbols depicting spearheads. The four Bo Leaves added by Wijeyeratne reflect the core principles of Mettha (loving kindness), Karuna (compassion), Upeksha (equanimity) & Muditha (happiness). Symbol Represents The lion – The Sinhalese ethnicity The bo leaves – Buddhism and its influence on the nation. They also stand for the four virtues of Kindness, Friendliness, Happiness and Equanimity. The sword of the lion – The sovereignty of the nation The curly hair on the lion’s head – Religious observance, wisdom and meditation The beard of the lion – Purity of words The handle of the sword – The elements of water, fire, air and earth The nose of the lion – Intelligence The two front paws of the lion – Purity in handling wealth. The vertical orange stripe – The Tamil ethnicity The vertical green stripe – The Muslim faith and Moor ethnicity The yellow border round the flag – People from other cultures living in Sri Lanka The crimson background – Other minor religions and ethnic groups, Portuguese/Dutch Burghers. Also refers to the rich colonial heritage and background of the country.
2008 Quit Campaign
It’s heart breaking… pretty convincing too… I can’t understand why people don’t seemed to get it, even when the consequences are so evident. Smoking is an addiction. People are foolish enough to inhale toxic fumes into their bodies and yet seemed to be satisfied. Naturally sickness and death is inevitable, but why hurrying up to catch it by smoking and yet end up dying miserably slow painful death? I have seen other ads that showed gruesome footage of diseases caused by smoking, but nobody seemed to be convinced.
I think the most disastrous and pathetic thing that can happen to anybody is to be fooled by themselves in the end.
I have always wondered…

Ice age Ice age Ice age…………!
Yay! I watched Ice age last Sunday!!! I was sooo looking forward to it. The 3D experience was AWESOME!!!!! I watched it giggling all the way like a five-year-old. The effects were amazing but I felt that it wasn’t enough, I mean I noticed that it wasn’t 3D all the way. The story line was great. No boring bits.
The prehistoric creatures who all had either sabre-tooth/s or a horn was funny.
Diego’s antelope (or similar animal) chase should have been more creative, I mean with the 3D stuff. Fell in love with Manny’s effort in the play ground.
Sid was hilarious as always,The egg chase was cool and loved the cute noises that the baby dinos made.
Bucks the wacky weasel was… CRAZY (or what?)
Scrat and his girl Scratte was cute!loved their tango dance! (fighting over the nut!)
Loved the final rescue mission, which was carried out by Bucks and Crash& Eddie, flying a prehistoric bird!! That was intense
The viewing spectacles were annoying because, I knocked off bunny’s face few times as I was whispering things to him. That was my only silly negative point

Boys night out…
What a way to kick start the weekend…? the boys (my bunny’s friends) are going to throw out a buck’s night (It’s not a surprise to the groom to be). And I wonder how many buck’s came this way this year..? probably 4 or 5. Getting married is being re-phrased as “getting in to trouble” but wonder why those guys get married knowing that
After weeks of hush-hush over the phones, the girls are also planned to go out. “Planning out” happens every time when the guys have a bucks but “going out” part happened only once! Yeah, I’m so lame in convincing myself that I can party alone. Besides the last time I went out, I missed my bunny so much.
On the other hand the boys find it very easy to break outta the normal routine and have fun. They don’t need “permission” as some girls among us does from their husbands. I think I fall into the same.Even though I get the green light from bunny, I’m never convinced! Somewhere inside of my mind, the voice tells me that I’m right. And I don’t push it. Because I still consider it’s worth, when it comes to the marriage. Call me “conservative”, I’m not surprised…
Lily Allen – Not Fair lyrics
like the catchy tune.. And the cute video…
oh he treats me with respect he says he loves me all the time
he calls me fifteen times a day he likes to make sure that I’m fine
you know I’ve never met a man whose made me feel quite so secure
hes not like all them other boys they’re all so dumb and immature
there’s just one thing that’s getting in the way
when we go up to bed you’re just not good it’s such a shame
I look into your eyes I want to get to know you
and then you make this noise and its apparent it’s all over
it’s not fair and I think your really mean
I think your really mean
yes I think your really mean
oh your supposed to care but you never make me scream
you never make me scream
oh it’s not fair and it’s really not ok
it’s really not ok
it’s really not ok
oh your supposed to care but all you do is take
all you do is take
well I lie here in the wet patch in the middle of the bed
I’m feeling pretty damn hard done by, I spent ages giving head
then I remember all the nice things that you’ve ever said to me
maybe I’m just overreacting, maybe your the one for me
there’s just one thing that’s getting in the way
when we go up to bed you’re just not good it’s such a shame
I look into your eyes I want to get to know you
and then you make this noise and its apparent it’s all over
it’s not fair and I think your really mean
I think your really mean
yes I think your really mean
oh your supposed to care but you never make me scream
you never make me scream
oh it’s not fair and it’s really not ok
it’s really not ok
it’s really not ok
oh your supposed to care but all you do is take
all you do is take
there’s just one thing that’s getting in the way
when we go up to bed you’re just not good it’s such a shame
I look into your eyes I want to get to know you
and then you make this noise and its apparent it’s all over
it’s not fair and I think your really mean
I think your really mean
yes I think your really mean
oh your supposed to care but you never make me scream
you never make me scream
oh it’s not fair and it’s really not ok
it’s really not ok
it’s really not ok
oh your supposed to care but all you do is take
all you do is take
“You write the most stupidest posts….this just tops the rest…!” :)
I just got the above comment on Who wears “Prada”???? Devil???? Nah… don’t think so…..! which has ended up in spam because the sender’s name was “Anon the great” with a bogus URL.
I could have let in sit on the spam folder without giving it any priority (not that I spam all the negative comments) O:) But I got it just about the right time when I was wondering what I should write next. I wanted to share this with you because I welcome critiques into my blog. May be writing “stupid” stuff is how I express myself, May be what’s good in my eyes might be wrong in someone else’s. But I can’t seem to find a reason for someone to read not one but all my “stupid” posts wasting their time and end up commenting as such! However, I must thank “Anon the great” for spending time to analyze my “stupidity” . [ROTFL...] Above all I appreciate the comment for making me think about it and write. [giggles...]
Well, I suppose most of us don’t have to read right through to the end of a post to realize that it’s stupid. And once we realize a certain blogger’s post is stupid, we don’t go to read all of the other posts on that blog (at least a few) to see if that blogger is really stupid.. I mean come’on!
Small Miracle…
Oh how much I adore you. It’s the best place to be, I’m greatful to be a part of you..!
Who wears “Prada”???? Devil???? Nah… don’t think so…..!
I went shopping yesterday, it was much less a window shopping, which I love to do because I get a good idea of what’s in and what’s not. And even I could grab myself a bargain! But to tell you, there are times that I fall in love with stuff that I couldn’t even wait for a bargain… [smirk] I think I am a sensible shopper. I used to be a shopaholic, but my perspective of shopping gradually changed overtime. Not just because I wanted to change it, but something I read on an article that was all about it.
I began to criticize the person who fights for a bargain at the boutique for a handcraft while having an high end designer hand bag hanging on her shoulder. The one who’s in designer high heels that matched her hand bag. The one who wears a watch which is insured that cost her more than her health insurance! How that person forgets the fact that she had already paid even twenty times more than the actual value.
I wouldn’t want to argue about the happy feeling that somebody gets when he’s “rich” enough posses such a “valuable” item. And I must say that I understand the “connection” between “quality” and “value”. But I’m afraid that most of the people have no idea to place “sensibility” to that “connection”.
I question myself often how so many of us had forgot or don’t know how to value a “person’s” hard work on a certain product that’s on for sale. Or how people hesitate to give something for charity, even on giving up some old clothes to “Salvos“! So Who wears “Prada”???? Devil???? Nah… don’t think so…..! It’s just people like you and me..
